Speak Out on Violence: DORIS KASOTE
DEAR Raphael and Namukolo,
I have observed and listened to many Christians claiming that they are protected by the blood of Jesus from being affected by the coronavirus. As a result of such belief system some are consequently not taking seriously the hygiene guidelines that have been given by the authorities to check the spread of the virus. What advice can you give to such believers?
Many well-meaning Christians take such a stance in our community. Unfortunately, this approach comes about because of a failure to have a holistic understanding of what the Bible teaches. The Bible teaches a salvation that is past, present and futuristic. The benefits that accrue to believers from the death of Christ on the cross span a whole spectrum of time, from the past into eternity. Failure to understand this leads to believers wanting to experience now things that are yet to come.
In the beginning, when God created the world, he put in his universe, natural laws by which the universe would be governed. After Adam and Eve fell from their perfect position by disobeying God, the earth was placed under a curse. This negatively affected life on earth as we can see from Romans 8:20-21. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope (21) that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
When a person becomes a Christian, many things immediately change in their lives and in their standing before God. They are now children of God. Nevertheless, many more benefits, like the redemption of their physical bodies are yet to come. This means that Christians are still subject to the natural laws that God put in place to govern his world in the beginning and after the fall. This is the reason Christians still get sick just like their non-Christian counterparts and they get affected by the different calamities that afflict human beings on earth.
God wants his children to be aware of this status quo and to take care of their lives by behaving responsibly. To behave as if the Christian is immune to sickness is to go against the clear teaching of scripture. The Bible calls this testing God and it can have far-reaching consequences on the believer. Many believing that they are not supposed to get sick have neglected medication and ended up losing their lives.
The new world and the resurrection body is yet to come at the resurrection.
1 Corinthians 15:41-42 (41) There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory. (42) So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable.
Revelation 21:1-4 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. (2) And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. (3) And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. (4) He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Furthermore, such wrong beliefs can equally lead to Christians disobeying the governing authorities. God sets governments in place so that there might be order in the world. Romans 13:1-2 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. (2) Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
In seeking to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, and thus safeguard all our lives, the government has put and will put different measures in place. For example, the mandatory washing of hands with soap, the closing down of certain places, the limiting of operating times for churches and different institutions, the discouraging of shaking hands, etc. God who put these authorities in place, instructs his children to cooperate with them. The Christian who deliberately ignores or out rightly disobeys such laws, sins against God.
Isaiah 45:22 “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.
