Agric show to invite 10 schools – Silwamba

AGRICULTURE and Commercial Show Society president Caroline Silwamba says for the first time this year, the society will have schools drawn from the ten provinces of Zambia compete in various categories.
Ms Silwamba said in an interview that the schools, which started their competition at district and provincial levels, will be adjudicated in various categories that include agriculture, livestock and fisheries.
She said the participation of schools is good for other schools within Lusaka that will have the opportunity of visiting the show society to learn on how to manage their agricultural activities in their own schools.
“For the first time this year, the agriculture and commercial show will have participants from schools drawn from the 10 provinces of Zambia. All the winners from the provincial competition will be at the show exhibiting their goods and services in the agriculture, fisheries and livestock,” Ms Silwamba said.
She said the schools will be housed in the livestock section and as a way of encouraging school-going children, the show society will be giving half-fare to all schools accompanied by their teachers who will visit the schools’ exhibition section.
In the past two years, Chipembi Secondary School has been taking part in exhibiting its agriculture services and has bagged various awards to their name.
Mrs Silwamba is impressed with the participation of women farmers in the agricultural show activities.
She said women farmers have been actively involved in the seminars which are held by the society every year, an indication of their willingness to learn and be able to perform well in their farming activities.
“This year, the show society will be holding the training seminars targeted at empowering farmers in various skills. The topics lined up include the production of mushroom, production of nutritional drink from spirulina and land policy,” Ms Silwamba said.
