AfDB funds Mwami-Mchinji one-stop border

MAYENGO NYIRENDA, Chipata
THE African Development Bank (AfDB) has provided US$7.5 million for construction of a one stop border facility at Mwami/Mchinji Border in Chipata as part of the Nacala Corridor development project.

The Mwami/Mchinji one stop border facility will be built under phase four of the Nacala Corridor development project.
Eastern Province permanent secretary Chanda Kasolo said in Chipata recently that the one stop border post will enhance Zambia’s trade with neighbouring countries.
Mr Kasolo said the construction of the facility is aimed at promoting regional trade and integration.
He said the project will help boost trade among Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique.
Mr Kasolo said once the project is completed, more goods in the region will be imported and exported through the one stop border post.
Meanwhile, Mr Kasolo says a South African company plans to put up a 300 megawatts thermal power plant in Chipata.
He said the site where the power plant will be built has already been identified.
