ActionAid urges Lungu to address mineral tax

KALONDE NYATI, Lusaka
PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu should address issues surrounding the country’s mineral tax system to ensure a win-win situation for the country and investors, ActionAid Zambia says.
ActionAid Zambia country director Pamela Chisanga said President Lungu should work towards an optimal tax system that will strike a balance between ensuring benefit for the public and encouraging quality and  sustainable investment in the country.
“His Excellency Edgar Lungu comes in at a time when Zambia has a number of unresolved but, critical challenges such as the impasse on [value added tax] VAT refunds and the contestations on the proposed mineral royalties for the mining sector,” Ms Chisanga said.
Ms Chisanga said in a congratulatory message in Lusaka on Sunday that fair taxes will translate into the economic transformation of the country.
“When companies pay their fair share of tax to our country, it has the power to help us build a better future by providing vital public services,” she said.
She also urged President Lungu to uphold transparency and accountability in the management of national resources.
Ms Chisanga has since congratulated President Lungu for being elected sixth Republican President of Zambia and the country for the peaceful election.
