Multinationals behind damage to environment

VICEPRESIDENT Mutale Nalumango says multinational corporations, particularly in Africa, are responsible for polluting the environment resulting in unpredictable weather patterns which are causing havoc in communities, hence deepening violation of human rights.
She has called for global cooperation in reversing negative effects of businesses on the environment.
Addressing the United Nations high-level event on human rights in Geneva, Switzerland, Mrs Nalumango said certain business operations are responsible for destruction on the environment through greenhouse emissions, hence requiring urgent global action.
“In Africa, for example, many countries like my country, Zambia, have contributed marginally to environmental degradation but, like other low-income countries, bear the severest consequences of the resultant climate change due to the effect of business operations,” she said
