Zesco won’t let go of exports

ZESCO Limited’s survival is through exports of electricity and it can be a disaster if that line of business is shut down, says company managing director Victor Mapani.
And Mr Mapani said maintenance works, including replacement of weak transmission wooden poles and vandalised transformers, have now become a huge operational cost for the power utility.
Whenever there is a reduction in power generation that usually affects domestic supply, local consumers do insist on Zesco to review its export quotas.
But Mr Mapani said there is a positive impact of power exports on the balance sheet of the company and its financial viability.
