SEVENTY players have confirmed participation for this weekend’s Copperbelt Open Tennis Championship set for Mufulira Tennis
Zambia Tennis Association vice-president (North) Chris Chilekwa said in an interview from Mufulira yesterday that the participants will compete in the men’s and women’s singles categories and doubles event.
Chilekwa commended sponsors that have come on board to assist in staging the event.
“Our budget for the tournament is K35,700. I am happy to announce that we have managed to raise that money,” he said.
Zambia’s top seed Edgar Kazembe, Nkumbu Chonya, Donald Mabo, Henry Banda and veteran Lighton Ndefwayi among others will compete for honours in the men’s category.
Maggie Mutale, Priscila Kapungwe and Priscila Mayuka are favourites in the women’s category.
Chonya and Mutale are defending champions in the men’s and women’s singles respectively.
The winner in the men’s category will pocket K4,000 while the runner-up will walk away with K3,000.
In the women’s category, the winner will receive K2, 000 with the runner-up getting K1, 500.
