56 athletes picked for Region Five Games

ZAMBIA will send 56 athletes for next month’s Africa Union Sports Commission (AUSC) Region Five Games in Zimbabwe.
Delegation leader Gibson Muyaule said in Ndola yesterday that Zambia will be represented in athletics, athletics for people with disabilities, boxing, judo, swimming and men’s football.
The contingent has 10 swimmers, six judokas, 10 athletes, five Paralympic athletes, five boxers and 20 footballers.
The tournament will run from December 4 to 15 in Bulawayo.
Muyaule is confident the athletes will win medals.
He said the team will fight to build on the third-place finish during the 2012 tournament staged in Lusaka.
Zambia managed 40 medals, winners South Africa and Zimbabwe grabbed 132 and 65 medals, respectively.
“We have a very good team and we expect a lot of medals as these disciplines have shown dominance before,” Muyaule said.
And the budget for the outing to Bulawayo is K2 million.
Muyaule said the money will go towards the athletes’ allowances and purchase of uniforms.
The team is expected to leave for Bulawayo on December 2.
