500,000tn grain reserve too high, says study

NANCY MWAPE, Lusaka
GOVERNMENT should consider reducing the grain reserves stocks from the current 500,000 metric tonnes (MT) to 150,000 MT following the changing consumption patterns as it revises the Food Reserve Act next year, the Indaba Agricultural Policy Research Institute (IAPRI) says.
However, Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary Julius Shawa said Government’s policy is to safeguard national food reserves.
“We need to safeguard food reserve and government policy is to maintain 500,000 MT.
“The decision to reduce reserves is a policy matter that can only be addressed by my superiors http://epaper.daily-mail.co.zm/
