A TEAM of police and  immigration officers has arrested 48 Ethiopians for alleged unlawful entry into Zambia.
Immigration public relations officer Namati Nshinka said in a statement yesterday that the suspected illegal immigrants  were intercepted on Saturday between Mkushi and Kapiri Mposhi in a containerised Tanzanian registered truck.
The driver of the truck, Erasto Mbilinyi, 46, was also apprehended.
“This is a suspected case of human smuggling. Arrangements to move the suspected illegal immigrants to Kabwe for futher investigations are underway,” Mr Nshinka said.
And Central Province commissioner of police Standwell Lungu said the illegal immigrants were in a Tanzanian truck, registration number T977 BFT.
“What we have gathered is that they were being trafficked to an unknown destination. The truck was cornered on the Great North Road after we received [information] about their presence in Kapiri Mposhi,” Mr Lungu said.
He said the truck  was intercepted at Temwa lay-by in Kapiri Mposhi, and the Tanzanian driver, only identified as Mbilinyi, bolted but was later apprehended.
