THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has set September 14 as the date on which council chairperson elections for Itezhi-tezhi, Kanchibiya, Luvushimanda
and Lunte districts will be held.
In a statement availed to the Daily Mail yesterday, ECZ public relations officer Raphael Phiri said the commission will also conduct eight local government by-elections in Chililalila, Chitwi, Luansobe, Luntomfwe, Libonda, Mpidi, Kakonga, Chimanja and Mabinga wards.
Mr Phiri said the by-election in Itezhi-tezhi has been necessitated by the death of the incumbent council chairperson while those for Kanchibiya, Luvushimanda and Lunte follow the creation of new districts.
“The vacancies in Chililalila, Chitwi, Luansobe, Luntomfwe, Libonda, Mpidi, Kakonga, Chimanja and Mabinda wards are as a result of deaths and resignations of incumbent councillors,” he said.
Mr Phiri said candidates participating in the by-elections should lodge completed and attested statutory declaration and nomination papers subscribed before a magistrate, commissioner for oaths or returning officer on August 15.
He said candidates for the council chairperson by-elections should take along with them 15 supporters who must be registered voters.
Mr Phiri said candidates will be required to pay a non-refundable nomination fee of K2,000.
“Aspiring candidates in the local government by-elections should take along with them nine supporters who must be registered voters. Candidates for city and municipal councils will be required to pay a non-refundable nomination fee of K750, while those for district council will pay K400,” he said.
