THREE firms have expressed interest in establishing a fourth mobile phone voice service provider in Zambia in a tender closing this month.
Currently, South Africa’s MTN, India’s Bharti Airtel and state-owned Zamtel are the only mobile phone operators offering voice services in Zambia.
Minister of Transport and Communication Brian Mushimba said the bidding process follows Government’s approval of a law that allows more mobile phone voice service providers.
Earlier this year, Cabinet approved a new licensing framework for the telecommunication industry aimed at re-aligning and promoting competition in the sector.
In September, Government announced that it had given the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) a go-ahead to start the process of inviting bids for a fourth or fifth mobile-network provider in..http://epaper.daily-mail.co.zm/
