3 die in church, woman commits suicide in sewer pond

THREE juveniles have died while five others sustained injuries after blocks of the church building they were in fell on them in Mazabuka yesterday.
And a 38-year-old woman of Garden township in Lusaka has committed suicide by throwing herself into a sewer pond after a quarrel with her husband.
The accident happened around 16:00 hours during a church service at Plan 2000 Apostolic Church.
Southern Province commissioner of police Bonny Kapeso identified the deceased as David Simabula, 11, of Messengers’ township, Noria Dube, 13 and Tumelo Mukelabai, aged nine.
Mr Kapeso said in a statement issued yesterday that the other five who have been injured are all girls who have been admitted to Mazabuka General Hospital.
“The three bodies have been deposited in the same hospital’s mortuary,” he said.
And a 38-year-old woman of Garden township in Lusaka has committed suicide by throwing herself into a sewer pond after a quarrel with her husband.
Police spokesperson Esther Katongo named the deceased as Margaret Namukolo.
Ms Katongo said in a statement issued yesterday that the incident happened on Sunday around 07:50 hours.
“Ms Namukolo left her matrimonial home at about 04:30 hours after she had a quarrel with her husband and at about 05:00 hours, she phoned one of her sisters informing her that she was going to commit suicide by throwing herself in water,” she said.
She said Ms Namukolo was discovered dead in a sewer pond and the body was retrieved by the fire brigade and taken to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary.
Meanwhile, police have arrested a 34-year-old man of Chaisa township identified as Danny Mumba for allegedly murdering his wife.
Ms Katongo said the wife, identified as Esnart Phiri, 27, was found half-naked on Sunday around 16:00 hours in a pool of blood with multiple injuries at the couple’s matrimonial house.
“The weapon used is not yet known but the body was found lying in a pool of blood. The body is in UTH mortuary awaiting postmortem,” she said.
She said Mr Mumba has been charged with murder and is in police custody.
