ZAMBIA Cooperative Federation (ZCF) says the organisation has installed 244 solar milling plants across the country.
The solar milling plants are being installed in Northern, Lusaka, Central, Eastern, North- Western, Southern, Muchinga and Luapula provinces.
ZCF executive director James Chirwa is hopeful that the installation process will be done by mid-2017.
In an interview on Monday, Mr Chirwa said ZCF will continue formulating innovative programmes to support economic development and reduce poverty among the people.
“We have installed about 224 solar units and we are supposed to mount 2,000 units, out of which 37 are for cassava, five for rice and 1,958 are milling units.
“Any time from now we should be receiving 300 units from China. Our projection is that by mid-2017, all the units should be in the country and ready for installation,” he said.
Mr Chirwa said so far, 400 slabs have been constructed and only 1, 600 are remaining.
He said building the slabs in advance will help speed up the installation process.
“We want Zambian companies to benefit from the programme and we expect about 58 firms to be engaged. We want youths and women to benefit from this process in order to see Zambians running this project,” he said.
