22-year-old slayer handed 8 years

KALUNGA MUSONDA, Kabwe
A 22-YEAR-OLD man of Mkushi who caused the death of another man on allegations that he was practising witchcraft has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment with hard labour.
This is a case in which Chola Ngolo was charged with the murder of Mande Chinjipeni.
Ngolo appeared before Kabwe High Court judge Elita Mwikisa on Tuesday for judgment.
The convict was initially charged with murder contrary to Section 200 Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
The court, however, reduced it to manslaughter.
Justice Mwikisa found Ngolo guilty as charged.
Particulars of the offence are that on unknown dates but between August 3 and August 4 last year, Ngolo caused the death of Mr Chinjipeni.
The court heard that Ngolo burnt Mr.Chinjipeni on allegation that he was practising witchcraft.
Justice Mwikisa told Ngolo that the offence he committed was serious.
“You burnt this man so badly that he died as the witnesses testified. Whatever you heard about him, you had no right to take the law into your own hands,” she said.
In mitigation, Ngolo’s lawyer Kamo Simfukwe said her client is a young man who is married with one child in his care.
“He has been in custody from March 5 this year and he is pleading with the court to exercise leniency on him,” Ms Simfukwe said.
She said Ngolo is a first offender who regrets causing death by his actions.
Justice Mwikisa said the phenomenon of killing people on allegations that they are practising witchcraft has become common.
She told Ngolo to reflect on his action as the man he killed died painfully.
