20,000 mental patients get treatment

CATHERINE MUMBA, Lusaka
ZAMBIA last year recorded over 20,000 mental illness cases, most of which were caused by excessive alcohol intake and drug abuse.

Other prominent causes were schizophrenia spectrum disorders (condition which affects a person’s behaviour), mood disorders such as depression, HIV-related psychiatric disorders and psychiatric consequences.
Chainama Hills Hospital senior medical superintendent Margaret Chibowa said in an interview yesterday that 1,523 patients were admitted to the health facility while 19,803 were out-patients.http://epaper.daily-mail.co.zm/
