15-year-old mentally ill girl narrates rape ordeal

CHRISTINE CHIHAME, Kitwe
A 15-YEAR-OLD mentally ill girl has told the Kitwe Magistrate’s Court how a 25-year-old man of Ipusukilo township allegedly defiled her in his house and later gave her K10 to buy slippers.
This is in a case in which Morris Kamanga of house number IP1265  is charged with defilement on an imbecile.
It is alleged that Kamanga, on November 3 this year in Kitwe, had unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl knowing that she was mentally ill.
The girl testified that on the material day, her mother sent her to the market to buy cooking oil.
She testified that on her way there, she met Kamanga who asked her where she was going and she responded that she was on her way to the market to buy cooking oil.
She testified that Kamanga allegedly told her that he sells cooking oil at his house.
“When we reached at his house, he told me to go inside and he locked the doors before he defiled me and gave me K10 to but slippers,” she narrated.
The court heard that after sometime, the girl’s mother started looking for her and  she was informed that her daughter had accompanied Kamanga to his house.
“My mother started shouting and knocking on the door but he did not open the door and then she pushed it open,” she said.
She narrated that her mother found them stark naked when she entered the house and that Kamanga was apprehended with the help of members of the public.
Senior resident magistrate Daniel Musonda adjourned the case today for continued trial.
