CHAMBO NG’UNI, Kabwe
TWELVE pupils at Broadway Secondary School in Kabwe have dropped out of school this year after getting pregnant.
This came to light when Kabwe Central member of Parliament Tutwa Ngulube and district board education secretary Beard Mwanza visited the school recently.
Head teacher Kizito Kalonga informed Mr Ngulube and Mr Mwanza that his school recorded 21 cases of female pupils who fell pregnant last year.
“The number of pupils who fall pregnant every year is quite alarming. Most of these girls are made pregnant by men out there in society,” Mr Kalonga said.
He said of these cases, only two girls were impregnated by their fellow pupils.
Mr Kalonga said the guidance office at the school has intensified awareness programmes among pupils on the dangers of involving themselves in unprotected sex.
“Some of these cases are from child-headed homes where parents stay far away at farms and the pupils rent rooms and stay on their own,” he said.
Mr Kalonga also said the school is facing financial challenges and this has affected the effective execution of projects embarked on by the institution.
And Mr Ngulube said he will do his best to assist the school in various ways.
“We are government ourselves and we should find ways of helping by contributing to the projects such as the ones you have,” he said.
Mr Ngulube urged school managements and parent-teacher associations to be innovative and come up with ventures to raise funds for implementing projects.
