10 Copperbelt athletics clubs back Matete

MULWANDA LUPIYA, Kitwe
TEN Copperbelt-based athletics clubs have welcomed the move by former 400m hurdles world champion Samuel Matete to stage the inaugural Run for Fun race in Kitwe.
Chambishi Athletics Club (CAC) chairperson Mulenga Chipoma said in Kalulushi yesterday that Matete’s initiative is a step in the right direction.
The Copperbelt has 13 clubs.
“As CAC and other nine clubs, we welcome the organisation of the race which will be held in Kitwe next month and organised by our renowned athlete Mr Matete. This will signal the rebirth of athletics on the Copperbelt and in Zambia,” Chipoma said.
The event is billed for August 16.
Chipoma named the ten clubs as Nkana, Nchanga, Kasompe, Ndeke Cheetahs, G-Track, Luanshya, Mufulira, Ndola, Roan and Chambishi.
He said athletics on the Copperbelt has nosedived because the Elias Mpondela-led Zambia Amateur Athletics Association executive has abandoned the grassroot.
Chipoma said the Mpondela executive only gets active during the Inter-Company Relay.
Last week, Copperbelt Amateur Athletics Area Board secretary Lewis Mwenya said Matete is not supposed to organise any athletics-related events for allegedly not being a member of any club.
